Top 10 Greatest NES Games of All Time

by Jon Ferraro

It’s not easy coming up with the top 10 NES games of all time, but here’s my ideal effort:

10) Duck Hunt - As far as I?m concerned this is the only game that was worth having the Nintendo Zapper for.

9) Ice Climber - It’s a cult classic. I know it’s not the most advanced gameplay ever concocted but it’s still a blast to play, even to today.

8) Metroid - Absolutely innovative. Started a monster franchise. It might not be the ideal of the series, but where would it be without it?

7) Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - This might be a bit controversial. I know the game is not loved by many Zelda fans. But if you give it a chance, you can see tha it’s a real gem.

6) Castlevania - There might have been better games in the series, but where would it be without the original. Games like Resident Evil owe a great debt to this game.

5) Tecmo Bowl - Not only the greatest sports game for the NES, you could make an argument that it’s the greatest sports game in video game history. I’ll take this over Madden any day.

4) Contra - The amazing 30 player code that everybody memorized. It was impossible to beat it without it. It was also an astonishing co-op game.

3) Super Mario Bros - Where would the video game world be without this powerhouse? I remember how astonishing it was when the character moved, the screen followed. You can’t event think of the NES without this game.

2) The Legend of Zelda - I’ve actually lost count on how many games were influenced by the original Legend of Zelda. Even with its long and illustrious series, the original still might be the best one, and that’s really saying something.

1) Super Mario Bros. 3 - Incredible and innovative gameplay. You could tell where the future of gaming was headed after playing this game.
